Easton Hospital has about 180 beds, but if the facility doesn’t receive nearly 40-million dollars, it could be closed by next week — according to published reports.

WLVR’s Staci Inez spoke with local officials about what that means for jobs and health care in the Lehigh Valley.

Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure says losing Easton Hospital is a major concern.

“During the COVID-19 crisis, it’s extremely important to have this hospital in Easton. Not only for the residents and the city of Easton but also for the people of the slate belt who have come to Easton historically to get their care,” said McClure.

Easton Mayor Sal Panto says the hospital is also a major employer in the area.

“Easton Hospital is really important to the community of Easton because of its legacy..and it’s been here, but it’s also important to Wilson Borough because of the jobs,” said Panto.

In her daily briefing with reporters Tuesday, State Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said state officials are looking at options now.

“We are having discussions at the highest levels of the administration about the Easton hospital situation and how we might be able to help that hospital stay open, especially during these very challenging times,” said Levine.

Levine did not share additional details about what that help might look like.
