Five of the Lehigh Valley’s 11 ‘producer-only’ Farmers Markets will open – on schedule – the weekend of May 2nd. And for many, it’s not a moment too soon. The Easton, Nazareth and Trexlertown Farmers Markets open Saturday May 2nd. Emmaus and Saucon, on May 3rd. WLVR’s Brad Klein reports on the arrival of farm-fresh foods to the Valley.

“Producers,” in this case, are mostly farmers, but also bakers, or folks making jam or wine. For many consumers, it’s a welcome change from the grocery store.

Allison Czapp, is the director of Buy Fresh Buy Local of the Greater Lehigh Valley, an advocacy group promoting local foods. She says that the pandemic poses challenges to the Farmers Markets.

“You can go and make a run to the grocery store and stock up your pantry for a month, but are you going to only eat canned food items for that month, or frozen dinner? I think about what that does to people’s health at a time when we’re maybe already struggling psychologically with isolation,” said Czapp.

“Well, obviously the biggest concern is being able to keep people socially distant, maintaining that six-foot, circle around each person.”

Shoppers will have to look but not touch. And there will be handwashing stations and other changes. Czapp says that she’s already looking forward to the spring salad greens.

“…and then moving into strawberry season,  asparagus will be ready, rhubarb. And after that, more and more comes every single week,” says Czapp.
