The Lehigh Valley is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with virtual events on Jan. 18.
Bethlehem’s YWCA virtual celebration of Dr. King’s life starts at 10 a.m. with his “I Have a Dream” speech.
“This year, we are again working with our empowerment and justice committee to host a virtual event just to allow people to experience King’s speech, reflect on his words and his messages. And digest how that can affect them today,” says Jen Wanisko, YWCA program director.
Small group discussions will allow participants a chance to talk especially about current events.
“I suspect that with the very recent events happening in the Capitol, and more activity that might happen this weekend, and in the next week, I think those current events around white supremacy and racial justice in our country will really be on the forefront of everyone’s minds,” Wanisko says.
Additionally, the Allentown Art Museum is honoring Dr. King with events all week. The Allentown Band will host a performance at 7 p.m.Jan. 18, and volunteer opportunities can be found at the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley.
