Pennsylvania State Senator Lisa Boscola wants to give tax relief to struggling restaurants and bars so that they can stay in business during the pandemic.

Listen to the story.

After 26 years in the state legislature, she has a reputation for being independent.

The Democrat from Bethlehem wants to allow restaurants to keep the 6% sales tax owed to the state.

“The federal government gave us CARES money and $1.3 billion of that money went to balance the budget instead of to the businesses that were directly impacted by the shutdown,” she points out.

Boscola says she voted against the state budget last November because it did not do enough to support small businesses.

Many businesses have invested in safety measures to keep patrons and employees safe, she says, and restaurants should be allowed to operate at 50 percent capacity, with no additional restrictions.
