This week the Political Science department at Moravian College is hosting a screening of the 2020 documentary “Battleground” which is set in the Lehigh Valley.

Listen to the story.

Picture this: A conservative Republican and a progressive Democrat are sitting together at a diner talking about politics. It’s a scene out of the documentary “Battleground,” but don’t expect anyone to throw pancakes over a heated discussion.

“What’s important is to go beyond conflict. Because we live in such a polarized society that it’s almost impossible to have a conversation with somebody who you think is politically opposed to you,” says Hemal Trivedi, one of the filmmakers.

The film brings together the unlikeliest pair: Tom Carroll, chair of the Lehigh Valley Tea Party and Pastor Greg Edwards, who received Bernie Sanders’ endorsement in his 2018 congressional bid.

Without giving away any spoilers, Trivedi says the soul of the film is about finding common ground.

“It’s easier to have conversations with somebody you think you’re politically opposed to than you think,” Trivedi says.

The public is invited to join Moravian College students in a free virtual screening and discussion this Thursday. Registration is required through the college

This event is sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Engaged Humanities Consortium, with generous support provided by a grant to Lafayette College from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
