Some Pennsylvania families can once again visit loved ones at skilled nursing facilities thanks to St. Luke’s University Health Network which announced March 18 that it is easing the rules regarding in-person visits.

Listen to the story.

St. Luke’s Miners Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is located on the fifth floor of the St. Luke’s Miners Campus facility.

After nearly five months of visitation lockdown, patients at St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale can see and hug their families.

Wendy Lazo, president of St. Luke’s Miners Campus, says they have not allowed visitors into the rehabilitation and nursing center since October.

“Our residents experienced the entire holiday season without in person family contact. If you can imagine just how challenging that was for all of them and their families,” Lazo says.

Resident Arlene Breine enjoyed a recent visit from her son, Perry, for the first time in months.

“So this is just a great day, to be able to come and see her,” Perry Breiner says.

Mom quickly chimed in.

“Yeah. And we can go get together again and play games and have a gathering,” Arlene Breiner says.

The visits come after most of the residents have received their COVID vaccines. Lazo says that was an important step.

“We have offered all of our long-term residents the COVID-19 vaccine, and 94% of them have accepted and have now been fully vaccinated. It is time to welcome family and friends back to our facility to reconnect in person with their loved ones,” Lazo says.

St. Luke’s says they currently have zero COVID positive patients at the Miners campus.
