Pennsylvania’s “COVID Alert” app just been upgraded.

Listen to the story.

The free app now connects users to vaccine information, like where to find vaccine providers in their zip code.

Six months into its launch, Pennsylvania’s “COVID Alert” app has been downloaded just over 800,000 times.

Joann Ordille teaches computer science at Lafayette College. She says upgrades, like alerts for vaccine eligibility, are good but she says the app needs more users to be effective.

“We’re at about 6 % of the population of the state. So, if you think about the likelihood that a person you encounter who has COVID is also on this app, it’s pretty low,” Ordille says

The Pennsylvania Department of Health says it’s teaming up with health care providers to rollout more marketing for the app this spring. Over the next few months, the agency says it wants to reach 1.5 million users.
