New guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention permit people who are fully vaccinated to take off their masks outside.

Listen to the story.

But a Lehigh Valley Health Network doctor says he thinks the loosening of restrictions comes too soon for this region.

Those who are fully vaccinated can exercise, gather in small groups, and dine al fresco without a mask according to the new CDC recommendations.

However, Dr. Robert Murphy, chief physician executive at LVHN,  says the call is premature for those living here in the Lehigh Valley.

“We haven’t quite reached the population penetrance for vaccines to render herd immunity. Plus, we’re not quite at that time of year when folks are gathering outside, we’re still gathering inside a great deal of time,” Murphy says.

Counties in our region are still seeing case surges, he says.

“I think President Biden’s earlier projections of wanting to be able to have a society that has some degree of normalcy by July 4th, certainly is something that most of us feel we can get behind and support,” Murphy says.

The CDC reminds people that they are not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after their second shot.
