Liberty High School surprised  Harrison Bailey on April 29 with news that he has been chosen as the Pennsylvania Secondary School Principal of the Year by The Pennsylvania Principals Association.

Listen to the story.

Masked majorettes threw batons and the band played when Harrison Bailey walked through the gym doors. He was met with a standing ovation by the crowd. State Rep. Jeanne McNeill (D-Lehigh) was one of several local lawmakers who honored him with proclamations.

“Dr. Harrison Bailey has spent 25 years as an educator and 15 years as an administrator with the last nine years spent as principal of Liberty in the Bethlehem Area School District,” McNeill says.

Bailey is Liberty’s first Black principal. Staff praised his collaborative leadership style and trauma-informed approach to education. Students highlighted the effort he has made to unite the school community during the pandemic.

“I love kids. I want to see them meet their passion and purpose. I love my team and working to help them reach their passion and purpose,” Bailey says.

Bailey said it is an honor to serve.

“I come to work not as a ‘have to’ to but as ‘I get to.’ I get to work at Liberty High School. I get to serve our families and staff and it is an honor to do so with you. Not as your boss, not as your supervisor, as your colleague,” Bailey says.

Bethlehem’s mayor declared April 29 as Harrison Bailey Day, and the choir dedicated a song to him.
