The Lehigh Valley added another university to its roster. Moravian College is now Moravian University, expanding graduate-level education in Bethlehem.

Moravian’s President Bryon Grigsby says the transition to Moravian University was something that had to be done as the school expanded its curriculum.

“We have doctoral programs, 25 master’s programs, and “college” generally represents just undergraduate education,” Grigsby says.

More pathways for graduate-level study translates to more careers for students, he says.

The change will benefit undergrads too, he says, with more research opportunities, for example.

“Clinicals, internships, all those kinds of things that come with faculty who are operating at a university level, receiving federal grants. So the resources that are available to the undergraduate population grow exponentially by being a university,” Grigsby says.

Grigsby says this move will also help attract international students.

“It makes our students understand global issues a whole lot easier as they room with students from other countries and get to know their lifestyle, their food, their political views, their interests,” he says.

Despite its university status, Grigsby says he doesn’t expect the school’s physical footprint to change in the near future.
