Lehigh Valley Health Network is taking part in a Pfizer study to determine whether a booster shot for the COVID-19 vaccine is needed.

Listen to the story.

Dr. Joseph Yozviak is LVHN’s principal investigator for the Pfizer vaccine trial and now the booster trial.

He says the group will be selected from employees who participated in the first round of vaccine studies last fall.

“In this study, they’ll receive a third dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, or a saline placebo,” Yozviak said. “So as we move forward, we’ll have a group of people who have three total doses versus a group of people who have two.”

Yozviak says researchers will be looking for COVID-19 cases in either of those groups, along with monitoring the severity of the cases and if the third shot is safe.

He said researchers should be able to analyze antibody levels pretty quickly. It’s possible we’ll have an answer this fall as to whether people need a booster shot, he said.

The booster trial will begin within the next few weeks.
