Last year, in an effort to help provide food to hungry families throughout the region, Trexlertown-based Air Products and Chemicals Inc. donated more than $4 million to the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley.

But, this year, through the Fresh Food Promise program, the company could possibly contribute much, much more.

Laura McHugh, associate vice president of marketing and communications for the United Way, said at the height of the pandemic, the non-profit was working to feed nearly 100,000 food insecure people each month.

Every month about 60,000 people still need food, she said.

“We’ve never had a matching gift before like the Air Products fresh food promise,” she said. “There’s no limit to this.”

Through this program, for every new donor, Air Products will provide an additional gift of funding to afford a day’s worth of food for a family in need.

Laurie Gostley Hackett, Air Products’ director of community relations and philanthropy, said the program is intended as a way to support the community of which it has been a part for more than 80 years.

“We have a responsibility to serve. Air Products has a responsibility to step up, step out and serve and we are encouraging others to do the same,” Hackett said.

The program runs through March and the amount of food it could provide is, at this point, unlimited.

“It’s hard to know how much it could be,” Hackett said. “We didn’t know how it could go, but when I shared this idea with the United Way, they were like ‘that’s fantastic.’”
