The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this week bumped Lehigh County up to a “substantial transmission” designation from its previous “moderate” rating.

Listen to the story.

And as COVID-19 cases rise in the Lehigh Valley, the state Department of Health (DOH) is opening up a new, and free, testing site.

It’s located on the campus of Lehigh Carbon Community College. The Department of Health says the site has the capacity to test up to 450 people per day.

The testing method is a nasal swab. No appointments are necessary and people may walk-up or remain in their cars.

Lehigh County was chosen for the clinic because of rising case counts in the area. According to the state’s online COVID-19 Dashboard, Lehigh and Northampton counties have among the highest positivity rates in the state, according to a DOH spokesperson.

The agency said anyone who thinks they’ve been exposed to COVID should get tested. The turnaround time for testing results is one to three days.

The campus clinic is open now through Aug 13. Tests are available 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The site is available through a partnership with AMI Expeditionary Healthcare.

Other testing sites are open Monday through Thursday in Northampton County through Aug. 12, Tuesday through Saturday in Centre County through Aug. 14, and Tuesday through Saturday in Greene County and Mercer County welcome centers through Aug. 21.

  • Testing in Northampton County is available 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Paxinosa Elementary School, 1221 Northampton St, Easton
  • Testing in Centre County is available 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.at Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority Interpretive Center, 253 Transfer Road, Bellefonte
  • Testing at the Greene County Welcome Center is available 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at I-79 N Mount Morris
  • Testing at Mercer County Welcome Center site is available 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at I-80 East, West Middlesex.
