After holding a virtual event in 2020, Lehigh Valley Pride returns this weekend for its 28th year.

Listen to the story.

Organizers said the celebration of LGBTQ arts and culture will focus on inclusion, equity and celebrating with community and allies.

Adrian Shanker, executive director of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center, said people deserve a chance to come together.

“The community really needs and deserves the chance to come together, celebrate how far LGBT people have come, celebrate the history and legacy that lets us stand where we stand today and continue that struggle and fight for legal, social and health equality in every corner of the Lehigh Valley,” he said.

Lehigh Valley Pride is set for Sunday, Aug. 15, at the Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley in Allentown.

It will feature about 125 artists and retailers, as well as drag performers, musical acts and, for the first time, a mural painting. Tickets are $10; it’s free for kids 13 and under.

Shanker said the outdoor festival will also be taking precautions against COVID-19. He said masks will be encouraged but not required for most of the festival.

“The one part of the event that is indoors is our pre-pride faith service where masks will be required,” he said. “But, for our outdoor event, we are strongly encouraging — but we aren’t requiring — masks. We are hoping that our community cares for each other by wearing masks, especially when interacting with other people who are.”

There will be free COVID-19 vaccinations available for those who want them.
