BETHLEHEM, Pa. – PA STEAM Fest returns Saturday, August 21 to the SteelStacks campus in Bethlehem.

Event organizer Kat Mahoney of TheGeekGrid Studios explained “STEAM” stands for science, technology, engineering, art and makers.

The two-day event aims to show the positive effects of video games, social media and more of the traditional science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) education, she said.

“My biggest hope is inspiration,” Mahoney said. “We want people to walk away inspired, going home and not stopping at STEAM Fest, but going home and wanting to create, wanting to look at what they’re going to do in the future.”

ArtsQuest is hosting the event, which runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Workshops will focus on voice-over acting, anime drawing, architectural design and wearable tech. There are also opportunities to learn about esports, cosplay, fashion design, 3D printing, guitar-making and more.

Mahoney says she created the event to inspire her own children, two of whom are on the Autism spectrum. Mahoney says sharing her own computer and video game designs with her kids got them curious.

“They would sit on my lap and watch this and they would really start to ask questions,” Mahoney said. “Afterwards they would realize, hey, I just did a math problem or I just did some science.”

Guests can purchase tickets online ahead of time. The workshops will be held mostly outdoors.
