Almost two months after being sworn in as a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, Adrian Shanker, executive director of the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center in Allentown, offers his expertise as a member of the organization that advises the secretary of health on the national response to HIV/AIDS.
“The lens that I come with is really a lens, focused on health disparities in a community,” Shanker, who has long worked for better education for doctors and for acceptance of LGBTQ people, said.
Lehigh Valley Health Network physician Joseph Yozviak, one of the leading providers of HIV treatment in our region, said testing and treatment can not only help provide a normal lifespan for those living with HIV/AIDS but can also help stop transmission.
“The policy that this group develops is really going to drive the public policy approach to the HIV and AIDS epidemic into the future,” Yozviak said.
Shanker will serve a 3-year term on the council.
