Bethlehem’s 10th Holiday House Tour will be held Saturday, Dec. 11.

Ticket-holders get to visit 10 homes and four historic sites that are cornerstones of the city’s 280-year history.

Listen to the story.

The tour, a self-guided circuit clustered around the Christmas City’s downtown area, is the Bethlehem Historic District Association’s biggest fundraiser.

The event’s chairman, Mark Nebbia, said the Holiday House Tour is as much about the future as it is about the past.

“When our first settlers were here, they made a contribution to Bethlehem,” he said. “Now as the caretakers of these homes [we] also are passing our legacy through to the next people that will be here.”

Nebbia’s own home on Church Street is one of the historic and festively-decorated houses on this year’s tour.  He said efforts to preserve and promote Bethlehem’s historic charm have been key to the city’s survival.

“When the Steel was closing, this town was in danger of going the way a lot of the other rust belt cities went,” he said. “The folks who took chances and were creative came up with a way to save the city.”

Ticket sales raised $70,000, which will be split between the Historic District Association and the group Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites, which is working to designate Bethlehem as a World Heritage Site
