Know your options: When to go to the ER – or elsewhere – for medical treatment

As the surge of COVID cases continues to fill local hospitals, people may hesitate to head to the emergency room with other illnesses and injuries.

Doctors at Lehigh Valley Health Network say to still come in, but also consider other options for health care.

Listen to the story.

LVHN professionals encourage patients to call for a virtual visit with mild illnesses or injuries, go to an ExpessCare location when a doctor must be seen, or they recommend the emergency room if the situation is serious and needs immediate care.

Dr. Richard MacKenzie, who helps run emergency medicine at LVHN, says despite the ER being busy they are still seeing people worried about coming  in because of COVID.

“What I say to the people is please come in. We’re here to protect you. No matter what you got, whether it’s COVID, or a broken finger, please come in and we can take care of you and we will keep you safe,” MacKenzie said.

LVHN also has injury centers across the region for people with strains, sprains, or broken bones.  The network has a list on its website to help patients determine what type of care they should be seeking.
