As it has been every year since 1943, March is Red Cross Month and this year’s celebration will focus on getting volunteers back in person.

The Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter covers nine counties, including Northampton and Lehigh.

Listen to the story.

Executive Director Peter Brown says this month is about celebrating the non-profit’s history and the volunteers, which make up 90% of its workforce.

“One of the things that we had to do for COVID was we did a lot of disaster response virtually. So the volunteers that were used to going to the home fires and to hug the clients to reassure them, did that work by phone or by computer,” Brown said.

Events are planned for each location to thank volunteers, he said, and to recognize some for their years of service.

There are about 3,000 volunteers across the state, Brown said.
