Pa. Senate approves bill barring transgender athletes from girls’ sports

The Pennsylvania Senate is advancing legislation that would prohibit transgender women from participating in women’s sports.

The bill that passed Tuesday was sent to the state House, which had previously passed an identical bill.

One Democrat crossed party lines to vote in favor of the Senate bill — state Sen. Lisa Boscola, D-Northampton/Lehigh.

Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf is threatening a veto if the proposal makes it out of the Legislature.

The proposal would require public K-12 schools and colleges to designate sports as male, female or coed.

A Lehigh Valley-based advocacy group for transgender persons condemned the bill.

“It is unfortunate that instead of focusing on the most important issues to the public — including school
funding, gun safety and deteriorating infrastructure — these legislators would rather focus on wedge
issues that would further stigmatize an already marginalized population” said Corinne Goodwin,
executive director of the Eastern Pennsylvania Trans Equity Project.
