LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. – A Lehigh Valley woman is being honored by the White House for her volunteer efforts.

Linda Mayger, of Saucon Valley, is a 2022 recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her efforts as a ShelterBox representative. ShelterBox is an organization that supplies emergency shelter and household items to people who have been forced from their homes by a disaster or war.

Listen to the story.

Mayger said her district, which includes the Lehigh Valley, was the No. 1 giving district in the entire country for Shelterbox.

“One of the things about ShelterBox is that it’s very tangible about what you’re giving toward,” Mayger said. “$1,000 gives a box and a tent. $150 gives a toolkit that can help people repair their homes.”

Maygar said ShelterBox can help people feel connected to what exactly their money is going toward.”

She said donations go to refugees in Ukraine and other places around the world.

“Sometimes it feels like, you know, nothing gets better, but there are people all over the place who are doing good things, and are really making a difference for people that they don’t even know,” Mayger said.
