ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Allentown Art Museum will be permanently free to visitors beginning Aug 27.

This change was made possible by an endowment gift from the Century Fund, a private foundation based in Allentown that recently closed and distributed its remaining assets.

Listen to the story.

Max Weintraub, museum president and chief executive officer, said the annual interest generated from the Century Fund’s endowment gift is enough to offset admission fees.

“Over the last couple years it was decided that perhaps the most beneficial way and most meaningful way to give back that gift to our community would be through eliminating admission fees in perpetuity,” Weintraub said.

The current cost of admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors, students and children older than 6. Admission is currently free for all on Sundays and the third Thursday of every month.

Weintraub said the introduction of free admission coincides with the reopening of the museum’s American Galleries
