ALLENTOWN, Pa. – What’s it like to walk a mile in the shoes of an oncologist?
For starters, those shoes are pink for one Lehigh Valley Health Network doctor.
From stylish sneakers to pretty pumps, every day in October Dr. Lori Alfonse features a pair of pink shoes on her feet.
As an oncologist and deputy physician in chief of the Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, Alfonse is passionate about raising breast cancer awareness, so she wears 31 pairs of pink shoes, a different one for every day of October, to bring attention to the cause.
“One in eight, you know, line up seven of your friends, one of you will get breast cancer over the course of your lifetime. That represents about a 12 and a half percent lifetime risk and lifetime being that we as women live to age 85,” she said.
LVHN is sharing Dr. Alfonse’s shoes on social media throughout the month. The network is also holding a “Pink Out” event Oct. 21 at its new Hecktown Oaks location just outside of Easton.
