Allentown City Council will soon have new leadership. And following the first meeting of the near year, it’s not the only change residents could see in 2021.
Two Dominican-Americans now head up Allentown City Council. In a city where more than half the population is Hispanic or Latino, previous leadership has mostly been white.
Julio Guridy, who is also running to be Allentown’s first Latino mayor– ran unopposed for Council President.
And Cynthia Mota, came out on top in the race for Vice President.
In addition to electing new leadership, Council is also putting three new questions to voters on the May primary.
The first proposes expanding the geographic residency requirements for department heads.
The council also wants to appoint its own lawyer for legal advice.
The third referendum would allow the top accountant more power to conduct audits in the future.
