HARRISBURG, Pa. – Important deadlines for next month’s statewide and municipal elections have arrived.

Today, Oct. 18, is the last day to register to vote, and Oct. 26 is the last day to request a mail-in ballot, which has to be sent out in time to reach the county election office by 8 p.m. on Nov. 2, Election Day.

With races ranging from school boards seats to the state Supreme Court on the ballot, Acting Secretary of State Veronica Degraffenreid said voters can help decide what happens in their backyards just by casting a vote.

“Every election is important, not just the ones held during even-numbered years, but those odd-numbered year elections that unfortunately do not get as much participation,” Degraffenreid said.

Next month’s election is a chance for voters to weigh in on local government and courtroom decisions, and the people who make them.

“People are always concerned about local taxes or school board taxes, or local rules or ordinances, or what the school board may be doing or things that may be happening, you know, from the perspective of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court,” she said.

County websites and the Department of State’s site, VotePa.gov, have all kinds of voter information, from instructions to ballot drop-off locations.

Degraffenreid said mail-in voters should submit their ballots as early as possible due to potential U-S Postal Service delays.

The Department of State says the U.S. Postal Service is prioritizing ballot deliveries in the next few weeks, and will deliver ballots to county election offices even without sufficient postage.

About 8.7 million  Pennsylvanians are registered voters, and since January, 42,000 more have joined them.
