Penn State University Lehigh Valley broke ground on a 14.4 million dollar addition to its Center Valley campus yesterday.

As WLVR’s K.C. Lopez reports, officials say it’s an investment in the region’s STEM and healthcare workforce.

Penn State Lehigh Valley is laying the foundation for a new three story expansion for its science programs. The school is building a new laboratory for organic chemistry courses, a prep lab, an equipment room and a lab technician office.

Penn State President, Eric Barron says, it’s about prioritizing healthcare and sciences; the region’s largest employers.

“The demand for workers with a background in sciences and technology is a constant. [The] new three story addition will provide state of the art facilities to support our students interests in STEM,” says Barron

To that end, the expansion will also include space for STEM tutoring programs, a new classroom and two faculty offices.

The project is set for completion in January 2021.
