More than 400,000 Pennsylvanians are once again able to receive Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, the state Department of Labor announced on Jan. 22.

In the early weeks of the pandemic in the United States, jobless claims across racial and ethnic groups in Pennsylvania were similar. But they soon diverged.
The unemployment rate is still much higher for Black, Latino, and Native American workers. They are also higher for women than men.

Two pandemic unemployment programs are set to expire at the end of this month unless the federal government steps in. Department of Labor and Industry officials say shutting them down will create difficulties for thousands of Pennsylvania workers.

More than eight months into the coronavirus pandemic, some Pennsylvanians are still unable to access the unemployment benefits they need.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced that unemployment compensation claims will be expanded from six weeks up to 52 weeks for the period beginning November 7.
