Teaching 9/11: How Liberty High School honors first responders

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Nearly 20% of Americans today are too young to remember firsthand the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. 

It’s one reason Liberty High School guidance counselor Travis Wuchter said he’ll keep memorial services going. He revived the school’s 9/11 service 15 years ago, after the school stopped doing it.

“I just think it’s important that people don’t forget,” Wuchter said. “I think it’s important for our students to see it and to know how impactful it was.”

Wuchter is also a volunteer firefighter. Each year, he has invited a first responder to speak to students. Over the years, some of the guest speakers have been people who helped to rescue people from the towers. 

“I hope they [students] understand the sacrifice that was made that day and after,” Wuchter said. “I want them to come away with an understanding and maybe a motivation to do something that helps their community.”

He said even if they were too young to remember, the sacrifices people made that day can help inspire students today.
