The Allentown School District is the last in the Lehigh Valley to move to some in-school learning. A hot topic at a recent board meeting was whether parents would have to buy uniforms for kids with only a few weeks left.
The Allentown School Board decided students won’t have to buy uniforms this year for the fourth quarter when in-person learning begins.
“Not everybody is back to work. They’re still living on unemployment. Or not getting unemployment. It would be a hardship,” says Board Member Phoebe Harris.
But that doesn’t mean students can wear whatever they want.
“We’re not going to have people wearing obscene, or things that are not appropriate to be wearing in school. We still have those guidelines. You must adhere to. It just won’t be a uniform,” Harris says.
The first phase of hybrid learning starts on April 19 when elementary schoolers return. The rest of the students will return on April 26.
The district is expected to return to mandatory uniforms for the 2021-22 school year.
