K-12 students can repeat the pandemic school year but deadline to sign up looms

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A new law allows Pennsylvania’s students to redo the previous school year. Families here have to opt-in but the deadline is coming up fast. 

Repeating the 2020-21 school year is now an option for K-12 students in Pennsylvania even if they had a passing grade for the year.

The law, Act 66, was signed by Gov. Tom Wolf late last month. 

It also lets students with disabilities, who would otherwise have turned 21 and aged out of school services, enroll in the upcoming school year. 

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Act 66 even applies to nonpublic schools and what it calls “approved private schools.”

Families who want their student to retake the pandemic school year must submit a notification form by July 15. The form can be found on the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s website.
