Lack of school COVID reporting standards raises questions about fall sports

COVID cases continue to pop up in Lehigh Valley schools during the first weeks of the new hybrid learning year. Some districts have been more public than others with their COVID reporting. And what happens when students start interacting with other districts – through sports.

Bethlehem Area School District is part of the East Penn conference, which has opted to postpone contact sports games until October.

But superintendent Joseph Roy says pre-season workouts are happening across the Valley. 

“I’m aware of other districts that have had cases on sports teams and have had to quarantine. We’ve been fortunate that that hasn’t been our situation,” said Roy.

Football, hockey and soccer games are slated to begin in just a couple weeks.

But there are no standard COVID reporting requirements for PA schools. While the state has made recommendations, health officials have said districts need to figure out what works best for them.
