Pennsylvania homeowners and renters are protected from eviction and foreclosure until August 31. WLVR’s Tracy Yatsko says one local organization is preparing for that day.
New Bethany Ministries Eviction Prevention Program is helping people from becoming homeless once Governor Wolf’s executive order runs out. Director of Operations Veronne Demeyseux says case managers are working directly with the courts, tenants and landlords to come up with a solution prior to an eviction.
“This is where we’re looking to fall in if we can make a payment for an individual, if we can help communicate with the landlord where maybe they won’t charge the individual late fees while they’re trying to catch up or whatever we can do to possibly help that individual or that family remain housed,” said Demeyseux.
Demeyseux says New Bethany is there to help bridge the gap between tenant and landlord.
“I would advise individuals to let their landlords know that there is this program out there looking to help both the landlord and the tenant.”
Demeyseux says tenants may be afraid to speak up to their landlord but she says now is time to have that conversation.
