Congress meets today to count the Electoral College votes for the 2020 Presidential Election. Dozens of Republican Congressional members, including eight from Pennsylvania are expected to object to certifying the election for Joe Biden.
Lehigh Valley Democrat Rep. Susan Wild finds the GOP members’ plan “disrespectful to the Constitution.”
“Their aim is to disenfranchise millions of American voters. They are attempting to subvert the will of the majority of American people and a Government that is intended to be of, by and for them,” she says.
Wild cites several prominent Republican members of Congress, including Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, who also disagree with blocking the votes.
She says the plan to object goes beyond partisan politics.
“That’s not what this is. This is literally an attack on our Democracy,” she says.
Wild says she believes the debate over the election in Congress will continue through Thursday, but that it is unlikely to change the outcome.
