The Phillipsburg high school class of 2020 in New Jersey had an in-person graduation Wednesday, July 8, but with an empty stadium.
Four hundred thirty-three students graduated from Phillipsburg high school… students sat spaced apart on the football field, and families watched online or outside the gates.
The graduation came after the new jersey governor raised the limit for outdoor gatherings.
Valedictorian Michael Gomez says even though families weren’t able to attend… he was still happy to be with his class one last time.
“It still felt like everything I hoped for graduation… it still was great to be honored…great to be here with my classmates…and even without the stadium it was an amazing day.”
Classmate Oluwakmei Adedoyin agreed.
“I feel blessed that the board of education and our principals worked really, really hard to make sure we had at least something…we had a zoom graduation a couple weeks ago, so they made sure that not only did we have that, but we had another one.”
The students threw their caps in the air when the ceremony finished and cheered their way out of maloney stadium.
