Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. is reportedly stuck with more than 15 million boxes of unsold cookies.
But locally, a move to online sales kept scouts from falling behind.
“Girls pivoted like never seen before. And they got really creative, you know, from using social media channels to text messaging QR codes,” says Alejandra McGinley-Sepulveda, head of Business Development for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.
“You weren’t able to see girls selling outside of grocery stores like we do traditionally. So, our girls were able to increase our online portion of sales by over 700%,” McGinley-Sepulveda says.
Cookies are big business for the Girl Scouts, with annual sales of more than $800 million nationwide. The funding goes to camps, travel and other programs.

But, McGinley-Sepulveda says, Scouts won’t see a negative impact, because they used social media to boost sales.
“They were able to just pivot and they did unprecedented numbers this year, ” she says.
McGinley-Sepulveda expects this year’s sales to match the year prior with about 300,000 cases of cookies sold.
