SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., – People are traveling more over the holiday weekend, traditionally a time when the number of blood donors decreases.

It’s also a time when the chances of an accident happening where blood is needed increases.

Listen to the story.

The Red Cross is pushing for donations this time of year. During the summer holidays, like Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, the number of people who donate blood drops.

Peter Brown, executive director of the Red Cross Pennsylvania Rivers Chapter which covers the Lehigh Valley, said this time of year people are traveling, so they skip appointments while the need for blood goes up.

“It’s really just a function of increased travel,” Brown said, “Particularly on highway travel plus more people doing more activities where there may be an injury due to an accident or a mishap of some type. It’s generally not related to scheduled surgeries or treatments, because those tend to drop a little bit around the holidays.”

Brown encourages people to give blood before they go on vacation or during their time away. The Red Cross has many locations to do so.

A blood drive is scheduled for July 13 in Allentown and appointments are available.

Donors who give blood between now and July 1 will receive a Red Cross tote bag as a thank you.
