BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A great-grandmother from Bethlehem has been named “Caregiver of the Year” in a national competition.

The Visiting Angels office in Bethlehem was the site of celebration as one of their own received the Caregiver of the Year award in the organization’s national recognition.

Listen to the story.

Each year, the company chooses an outstanding employee from across the country  to receive the honor.

Paula Perez has been with Visiting Angels for four years, helping clients who are elderly or disabled with everyday tasks. She works anywhere from five to seven days a week.

“Companionship is very important,” Perez said. “The most important thing is trying to keep their dignity, treat them as you would your own parent and that will get you through your day.”

Perez chose the profession after taking care of her own mother and her grandson who has cerebral palsy.

She was nominated by her coworkers and received a cash prize with the title.
